I had similar terrible write performance problems with the 9650SE (8 port model PCI-e), but as soon as i enabled write cache (we actually bought the BBU which enables the write cache automatically), the problems went away. I was getting something miserable like 2MB/sec write. After write cache was enabled it went up to *200MB/sec*!!

We are using 8 320GB WD RE2 drives (7 in RAID 5 64kb stripes, and 1 stand by). This is running on a very nice SuperMicro system with two quad core Intels and 16GB of RAM, Windows Server 2003.

I have two 3ware cards (9550's, 4 port, and an 8 port), and they do just fine. Nice and fast with the battery backup / write cache setup. Still, Areca has a big advantage on them now in performance. Next card(s) will be Areca.

This seems to be a really effective keyboard with lots of features. As I daily work with a keyboard I'm always looking for some new and better devices that make working much more easier. Maybe this keyboard is such a device.

Well, I would do some more research. I have 9550SX-8LP running on PCI-X 64bit with 8 WD Raptors in RAID 10 and the thing is quite fast - I'm consistently getting >80Mb/s while restoring SQL databases. Something is wrong with your setup. I'm actually not sure I'm getting the full speed out of mine but this is another story.

As I daily work with a keyboard I often realized how many differences can be found between the different types of today and I must admit that a wireless keyboard is one of the most effective introductions here because working with it is in most cases much more easier.

For the reader of this blog, a note: all the comments here calling me fool, not knowing what RAID is, etc. come from the same IP address registered to AMCC's corporate network (AMCC is 3ware's parent company).

Now instead of offering solutions, their representatives engage in such a disrespectful name calling just because I pointed out how flawed some of their products are.

Now, would you do business with people like that?

You have been proven wrong and should take this article down now.
You are testing in a 32 bit slot, you don't have the write cache enabled, and you don't know anything about RAID.

So do everyone a favor and take your slanderous ranting down because you are only making a fool of yourself.

Oh and I see from the picture you have it installed in a 32-bit / 33MHz slot. Guess what? This controller can be installed into a 64-bit / 66MHz PCI-X slot taking full advantage of the capability of the controller but what do you do, install it into a slot that runs the controller at half its bus clock and bitrate. Sorry dude, but you're a bigger idiot than I previously gave you credit for. You should not have the right to post such garbage in a public forum. Now go get a technical education and stop writing erroneous crap!

What do you expect from a SATA I RAID controller that only has a 2MB cache buffer? It's old design and if you purchased it in 2006, shame on you for being such a poor bastard for not knowing its specifications and capabilities ahead of time and then giving it such a bad review, saying the design is poor. Also, you should have checked to ensure the controller's write cache was enabled which it is not by default. I have pretty much every controller they've made and can attest that you must be a simpleton for not doing your due diligence before hand! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to read a data sheet. Oh one more thing, because this controller is only capable of SATA I Link Speed (150Gb/s) did you properly set the link speed jumper on the drive to match that of the controller so it wouldn't timeout? I bet not. Also did you check to see if your motherboard is over clocking this controller resulting in BUS and controller resets as its max BUS clock is 66MHz? Again, I bet not.

One thing to take from this, do your homework before you haphazardly purchase a product and expect it to work miracles.
